Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman demanded on Sunday that the proposal to award US President Donald Trump the Nobel Peace Prize be withdrawn, saying that the latter’s claim to have brought peace has been proven false.
Addressing a party meeting in Murree, Rehman questioned how the US, responsible for the bloodshed of Afghans and Palestinians, could be called a bearer of peace.
He expressed concern over the current situation in the region, highlighting ongoing economic conflict worldwide and the growing influence of the Chinese economy in the Middle East. He said the US is attempting to contain this by demonstrating its power.
Rehman said Trump won the presidential election on a peace agenda but failed to deliver. “How can supporting Israel in Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria be called peace?” he asked.
He recalled Pakistan’s military success against India, after which the US intervened to broker a ceasefire.
