Russia, China and Pakistan have proposed a draft resolution to the UN Security Council demanding an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Middle East, ahead of an emergency UNSC session.
It is not yet clear when the resolution will be put to a vote. The three countries have circulated the draft text, diplomats said and have requested members to submit their comments by Monday evening. The resolution requires at least nine votes in favour and no veto from the United States, France, Britain, Russia or China.
Meanwhile, Iran has called on the UN Security Council to convene an emergency meeting following US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. Iran’s UN envoy, Saeed Iravani, sent a letter to the Council condemning the US actions as unwarranted air attacks.
He stated that the targeted facilities are under continuous supervision by the International Atomic Energy Agency and fully comply with the Safeguards Agreement and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
