Fears have arisen that fuel supply may be affected owing to the strained situation in the region, prompting the government of Pakistan to decide on further tightening of national austerity measures.
In view of the rapidly deteriorating regional situation, a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister reviewed the implementation of fuel-saving and austerity measures. The session was attended by Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, National Security Adviser Lieutenant General Asim Malik, federal ministers and other senior officials.
The high-level meeting was informed that sufficient reserves of petroleum products were available to meet domestic requirements, while arrangements were also being made for additional cargoes. However, it was stated that instability in the Middle East and the wider region could disrupt fuel supply in the coming days, necessitating further conservation measures.
The prime minister directed that a comprehensive strategy be devised in coordination with the provinces to effectively deal with any emergency situation. He said the affluent should come forward to set an example of sacrifice and contribute to fuel conservation.
According to the communiqué, the public was also urged to avoid unnecessary travel and adopt measures to save petrol and diesel in order to prevent any disruption in availability in the future. Relevant authorities were instructed to remain prepared for emergency steps and to continue close monitoring of the situation.
