Google has quietly rolled out a major upgrade to Gemini by integrating it with NotebookLM, one of its most powerful AI research tools.
The new feature allows users to query Gemini using their own curated NotebookLM notebooks, marking a significant step in Google’s AI ecosystem.
NotebookLM has gained popularity as a personal AI research assistant that summarizes, explains, and connects information from user-uploaded sources. Reports in August hinted that Google was working on merging this tool with Gemini, and four months later, the integration is now beginning to roll out.
The update was first spotted by TestingCatalog over the weekend.
How NotebookLM integration works
With the new integration, users can instruct Gemini to use a specific NotebookLM notebook as context for their queries.
Gemini can also pull information from more than one notebook at the same time. The feature even works inside Gems, allowing for deeper and more customized AI workflows.
Once a notebook is selected as a source, Gemini applies its reasoning capabilities to analyze and expand on the information, helping users gain deeper insights from their own trusted materials.
Limited rollout for now
At present, the NotebookLM integration appears to be live only on Gemini’s web version.
The option is not yet visible in the Gemini app on Android, and access seems inconsistent across different Google accounts, suggesting a gradual rollout.
Productivity boost for power users
For heavy NotebookLM users, this integration could significantly enhance productivity.
By directly invoking Gemini with NotebookLM as a source, users can get answers grounded in their own documents, research notes, and references, reducing the need to switch between tools.
The Gemini integration follows a series of recent upgrades to NotebookLM itself.
Google recently launched an Ultra NotebookLM tier under its AI Ultra plan, offering higher usage limits and additional capabilities. The mobile app has also gained support for image-based sources, Infographics, Slide Decks, and the ability to save progress in Audio Overviews.
