Pakistan and Indonesia achieved a major diplomatic milestone as President Prabowo Subianto arrived in Islamabad for his first official visit in seven years. The visit saw the signing of several key agreements on Tuesday aimed at bolstering cooperation in education, trade, SMEs, halal certification, and archival research.
Warm welcome at PM House
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif received the Indonesian president with full ceremonial honours at the Prime Minister House. A smart contingent of the armed forces presented a guard of honour, followed by the planting of a commemorative sapling by President Subianto.
The Indonesian leader is also scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari and Chief of Defense Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir during his stay. Discussions will span trade, investment, defense, health cooperation, and information technology.
Multiple MoUs and agreements exchanged
Both governments formalized a wide-ranging set of agreements designed to strengthen long-term bilateral cooperation. These included:

The exchange ceremony marked one of the most comprehensive collaborative packages in recent years between the two nations.
Positive, constructive discussions between leaders
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the meeting as “very positive and constructive,” noting that cooperation in medical sciences, health, and vocational training was a central focus.
He emphasized efforts to enhance bilateral trade balance and confirmed that Pakistan will send doctors, medical professors, and technical experts to support Indonesia’s growing healthcare needs.
Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that Pakistan-Indonesia relations are built on 75 years of history, grounded in mutual respect and shared regional interests.
The prime minister warmly praised President Subianto, calling him a “wise leader of Indonesia.”

President Prabowo Subianto expressed gratitude for Pakistan’s hospitality, saying: “I thank you for the wonderful welcome. The salute from the JF-17 aircraft in the airspace was an honour for me.”
He reiterated that Pakistan and Indonesia share “historical relations” and stressed future cooperation in education, trade, agriculture, and technology.
Subianto welcomed Pakistan’s support in the health sector and confirmed that both countries exchanged numerous agreements and MoUs during the visit. He added that Pakistan and Indonesia had also adopted a common position on the Gaza issue, reflecting shared humanitarian concerns.
Strengthening ties for future
The visit marks a significant turning point in Pakistan–Indonesia relations, with both governments committing to deeper collaboration across strategic sectors. Officials say the groundwork laid during this visit will guide future cooperation in trade, investment, medical research, defense, and information technology.
