Eleven people were killed and two others injured early on Thursday when a test train collided with a group of workers at a station in China’s Yunnan province.
The accident occurred in Kunming during seismic equipment testing and prompted an immediate emergency response.
Kunming Railway Station confirmed the deadly incident on Thursday, saying a train testing seismic detection equipment hit a group of railway workers on the tracks. The collision happened at a curved section inside Luoyang Town Railway Station in the provincial capital of Kunming.
According to China Central Television (CCTV), the workers had entered the track area when the test train approached, leading to the fatal crash.
Rescue operations activated within minutes
Railway authorities quickly launched an emergency response plan, working with local government teams to conduct rescue efforts and provide medical treatment to the injured. Two workers survived but were hospitalized with injuries, officials said.
By later in the day, the railway station had resumed normal operations. Authorities said treatment for the injured and other aftermath procedures were continuing “in an orderly manner.”
Investigation underway
An official investigation has begun to determine the exact cause of the collision. Preliminary information indicates that the workers accessed the curved section of track before the test train arrived, but investigators are still reviewing all circumstances surrounding the incident.
Railway officials expressed “deep sorrow” for those killed and extended condolences to the families of both the victims and the injured. They added that responsible parties will be held accountable in accordance with laws and regulations.
