Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has rejected the 27th Constitutional Amendment by calling it a regressive step for democracy.
At a press conference in Islamabad, he stated, “We completely reject the 27th Constitutional Amendment as the decision has been unanimously endorsed by our Shura (council).”
He said earlier, the 26th Amendment was passed after thorough negotiations with the government. At that time, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was on board, and we considered their proposals carefully, implemented them, and that is why the 26th Amendment was approved with consensus.”
He further criticized the current government, saying, “It is the government’s responsibility to consult the opposition. However, this time, they have coerced members and claimed a forced and fabricated two-thirds majority, which is against democratic principles.”
He also addressed the role of the judiciary, saying, “We were principled supporters of the constitutional court, but everything was done against parliamentary and democratic values.”
Criticizing the pardon extended to the president, he questioned the basis of this decision and said it was against the democratic norms.
