Alec Baldwin finds himself embroiled in legal challenges once more, as he has declined to participate in a scheduled deposition related to a civil lawsuit concerning the Rust shooting.
A lawsuit brought forth by film gaffer Serge Svetnoy has brought renewed focus to the 2021 incident that resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.
Documents submitted to the court on September 10 indicate that Baldwin’s legal team has raised objections regarding the deposition, arguing that the actor ought to be required to testify only a single time. They contended that one transcript ought to encompass both Svetnoy’s case and an associated lawsuit in New Mexico.
Baldwin’s team stated that they had previously notified Svetnoy weeks ago that they would not move forward unless all parties consented to a unified session.
The legal action taken by Svetnoy
In 2021, Serge Svetnoy, a gaffer on the film Rust, initiated legal proceedings. He recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing Hutchins’ tragic shooting, expressing that the live round discharged from Baldwin’s prop gun came alarmingly close to hitting him.
Svetnoy has leveled serious accusations against the production, citing “negligence and unprofessionalism” and asserting that the incident has resulted in enduring emotional distress for him.
Baldwin's legal strategy
Baldwin's legal team has firmly rejected any claims of responsibility, emphasizing that the actor was informed the firearm was secure prior to the filming of the scene.
They contended that although Svetnoy might have experienced emotional distress, the absence of any physical injury undermines his claim for compensation.
Previous legal conflicts
The 67-year-old actor has faced several rounds of legal battles related to the shooting incident. He faced criminal charges, including involuntary manslaughter, which were ultimately dismissed in July 2024 due to allegations of evidence mishandling by the prosecutors. A judge has also prevented further efforts to revisit those charges.
Baldwin's legal team has emphasized his previous agreement with Hutchins' family as a reason to consider the issue resolved. Svetnoy's civil claim is progressing steadily.
