While the Punjab government continues to tout its efforts to modernize public transport across the province, the condition of bus stops, especially in Lahore, paints a different picture.
At Canal Road’s model bus stop, installed only a few months ago, ceiling fans and benches have been stolen, and the water cooler is out of order with its components missing. A women-led canteen initiative has also been shut down, with the tuck shop locked and non-operational.
Several bus stops in Liberty, Johar Town, Township, and along Canal Road are either in poor shape or nonexistent, with only boards marking their locations.
Despite these conditions, the transport department has claimed that repairs and upgrades are underway.
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said 50 bus stops would be converted into model stops by the end of August, with a total of 249 to be revamped across Lahore. He added that designs are being finalized for thousands of new bus stops throughout the province.
