WhatsApp is testing a new feature that makes it easier for users to see when their contacts are online.
The messaging platform has started rolling out a green online indicator to select iOS beta users after previously testing it on Android.
According to WABetaInfo, the feature is available in WhatsApp for iOS beta version 26.26.19.72.
Beta users can now see a small green dot at the bottom-right corner of a contact's profile picture on the Contact Info screen whenever that person is online.
The indicator disappears automatically once the contact goes offline, giving users a quick visual cue about their availability.
Feature still has limited availability
At present, the green online indicator is only visible on a contact's profile page.
Users must tap on a contact's profile picture to access the feature, as it is not yet available in the main chats list or the Chats tab.
Because of this limitation, the feature is currently less convenient than it could be if online status were displayed directly in the chat list.
No official release date yet
WhatsApp has not announced when the green online indicator will be available to all users.
The company is expected to continue testing the feature with beta users before deciding on a broader rollout.
WhatsApp also working on usernames
Separately, WhatsApp recently confirmed it is developing a usernames feature that will allow people to connect without sharing their phone numbers.
The feature is aimed at improving user privacy by replacing phone numbers with unique usernames.
However, reports suggest authorities have requested a review of the feature before its wider release, citing concerns that scammers could misuse usernames to impersonate trusted individuals or organisations.
