Cape Verde have stated that they possess the quality, the spirit, and the backing of the wider football community as they prepare for a major World Cup challenge against Argentina, led by Lionel Messi.
The debutants are scheduled to meet the reigning champions in Miami on July 3, with Argentina widely regarded as strong favourites to reach the last 16. Cape Verde, the smallest nation to reach the knockout stage, have already exceeded expectations with draws against Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia.
Netherlands-born midfielder Deroy Duarte stated that their initial aim was World Cup qualification, followed by progression from the group stage, both of which have been achieved. He added that the encounter with Argentina is viewed as another opportunity to create history, saying the team would give everything before the final whistle.
Cape Verde first World Cup appearance as 67th-ranked nation
Cape Verde, an Atlantic archipelago with a population of just over 500,000, arrived at their first World Cup ranked 67th, with many expecting an early exit.
Their progress has been shaped by long-term planning, including the recruitment of players from the country’s diaspora. Of the starting XI held to a 0-0 draw by Saudi Arabia in Houston, six players were born outside Cape Verde.
Three were born in the Netherlands, while others came from the Republic of Ireland, France, and Portugal. Cape Verde first drew attention with a 0-0 result against European champions Spain, where 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha delivered a notable performance.
They later held Uruguay to a 2-2 draw, further underlining their competitive form under coach Bubista. Qualification was secured after results elsewhere confirmed their progression, prompting scenes of celebration among players and supporters.
Back in Praia, supporters remained awake into the early hours as the national team’s achievement was marked across the capital. Coach Bubista stated that the objective from the outset had been to present Cape Verde on the global stage.
Duarte hails Argentina tie as dream opportunity
Goalkeeper Vozinha stated that the team carry belief and quality despite external expectations. Midfielder Duarte said the squad feel supported by fans across different countries and described the match against Argentina as a dream opportunity.
He added that football remains unpredictable, noting previous results against Spain and Uruguay as evidence.
