Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman met his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Wednesday during a goodwill visit, marking the highest-level engagement between the two countries since the 2024 political upheaval that ousted former leader Sheikh Hasina.
According to Bangladesh’s state news agency, the visit includes discussions on key bilateral issues such as extradition, trade, water sharing, and border security.
Jaishankar welcomed the Bangladeshi minister, stating that the meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations, though no detailed outcomes were disclosed.
Relations between Dhaka and New Delhi have shown signs of improvement since Tarique Rahman, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, secured a landslide victory in the February elections, replacing the interim administration that governed after Hasina’s removal.
Ties had previously been strained after Sheikh Hasina fled to India following her ouster, where she has remained since. Bangladesh has repeatedly sought her extradition, especially after she was sentenced to death in absentia over her alleged role in a violent crackdown during the uprising.
During the visit, Bangladesh is also expected to push for increased energy cooperation with India as it deals with the economic impact of ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
