The federal government has approved the wheat policy for the year 2025–26, under which farmers will be ensured a fair price for their crop.
The decision was taken during a meeting on the wheat policy held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The government will procure strategic stocks to ensure stable reserves and safeguard the interests of farmers.
The high-level meeting, held yesterday under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was attended by the chief ministers of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan. The Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was represented by a delegate, while the Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and other relevant stakeholders were also present.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that Pakistan has an agricultural economy, and the wheat crop holds central importance. Wheat is a staple food for the people of Pakistan and represents the largest source of income for the country's farmers. He acknowledged that the government is well aware of the challenges faced by the farming community.
He added that farmers are the backbone of the national economy, adding that the policy has been developed in consultation with all provinces and farmers' organisations.
The premier said: "On the basis of these consultations, the government is announcing the National Wheat Policy. The aim of the policy is to protect public interests and ensure profitability for farmers. The support of the provincial governments in formulating a unified policy is commendable."
