Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi has underscored the critical importance of a unified and inclusive approach to judicial reform, declaring the National Judicial Policy as central to the effective functioning of the country’s legal system.
Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad, the chief justice emphasized that collective wisdom always prevails over individual interests, adding that sustainable reforms can only be achieved through the active participation and ownership of all stakeholders.
In a significant development, Justice Afridi revealed that the judiciary is actively considering the introduction of a two-shift system in courts to expedite the hearing and resolution of cases. He also announced that pending criminal cases will now be heard in model criminal trial courts, where judges will hold daily hearings to ensure timely justice.
“The idea is to ensure that cases, especially those facing repeated adjournments, are decided within stipulated timelines,” the CJP said.
He noted that he has visited courts across the country in a bid to identify bottlenecks and improve the judicial process. Stressing the need for modernization, Justice Afridi declared that the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the justice system is a top priority.
“The use of AI will help optimize court performance, streamline case management, and increase transparency,” he stated.
