The National Disaster Management Authority has issued an alert over rapid glacier melting and related hazards in mountainous and upper areas of the country.
According to the NDMA, continuous intense heat and expected rains may increase water flow in rivers and streams from June 27 to July 3, raising the risk of flash floods, landslides and mudslides.
An NDMA spokesperson said glacial ice melt is likely to increase the flow of water in rivers and streams during the coming days.
The authority warned that rapid glacier melting could cause sudden rises in water levels in rivers, streams and channels originating from glaciers.
The NDMA said increasing pressure on glacial lakes may also trigger sudden water discharge, creating risks of flash floods, landslides and mudslides.
Sensitive areas identified
Most areas of Gilgit-Baltistan have been declared sensitive due to the potential glacier-related hazards. The NDMA advised special caution in Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu, Shigar, Ganche, Kharmang, Astore and Diamer.
Local administrations in areas located near glaciers in Gilgit-Baltistan have been instructed to remain alert and monitor the situation closely.
KP upper districts on alert
Special caution has also been advised in Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Swat and adjoining areas. The PDMA in Peshawar also issued an alert about possible glacial lake outburst events in upper districts due to rising temperatures.
District administrations in Lower Chitral, Swat, Upper Dir, Kohistan and Mansehra have been directed to take preventive measures.

Tourists, locals advised to avoid rivers
The NDMA advised citizens to avoid unnecessary movement near rivers, streams and glacial lakes. Tourists, travellers and local residents have been urged to stay away from the banks of rivers and streams flowing from glaciers.
The PDMA also advised tourists to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers, streams and glacial areas.
People have been warned not to go near storm drains or flowing water during rainfall.
Check weather alerts before travel
The NDMA urged people planning to travel to mountainous areas to check weather conditions and official warnings before starting their journey.
Authorities said public cooperation is essential to prevent accidents and reduce risks in glacier-affected regions during the current heat and rain spell.
