Apple may finally be preparing to launch a touchscreen MacBook after years of speculation and denials.
A new report citing a well-known Apple leaker suggests the company has already confirmed plans to introduce touch-enabled MacBook models, potentially ending one of the tech industry's longest-running debates.
The development would represent a significant change for Apple, whose late co-founder Steve Jobs famously dismissed the idea of touchscreen laptops.
Leak claims touchscreen MacBook is confirmed
A leaker known as Instant Digital recently claimed on Chinese social media platform Weibo that a touchscreen MacBook is no longer just a rumor.
"It’s 100% confirmed that the MacBook screen will be touch-enabled," the leaker reportedly wrote.
However, no additional details were shared regarding which MacBook model will receive the feature or when Apple plans to launch it.
Apple has long resisted touchscreen Macs
For years, Apple maintained that touchscreens were better suited for devices like the iPhone and iPad rather than laptops.
Steve Jobs once argued that touchscreen laptops were uncomfortable to use for extended periods and that traditional input methods such as keyboards and trackpads offered a better experience.
Despite that position, industry analysts have repeatedly suggested that Apple has been exploring touchscreen Mac technology behind the scenes.
The latest claim aligns with earlier reports from well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman.
Earlier this year, Gurman reported that Apple was actively developing touchscreen Mac devices and suggested the first models could arrive as early as this fall.
According to previous reports, Apple is not expected to redesign macOS entirely around touch controls. Instead, users would be able to use the touchscreen when desired while continuing to rely primarily on the keyboard and trackpad.
Could the MacBook Ultra be first?
Rumors also suggest Apple is preparing to launch a high-end MacBook model later this year, potentially branded as the MacBook Ultra.
The premium laptop is expected to feature Apple's most powerful chips, an OLED display, and advanced hardware upgrades.
Industry speculation indicates this flagship model could become the first MacBook to feature touchscreen capabilities.
A touchscreen MacBook would bring Apple closer to competitors that have offered touch-enabled laptops for years.
The addition could provide greater flexibility for users, especially those who switch between laptops and tablets, while further blurring the line between macOS and iPadOS devices.
However, Apple has yet to officially confirm the feature, meaning the reports remain speculative until an announcement is made.
