The health experts have advised the consumption of five portions of fruit and vegetables daily to maintain good health.
A fruit salad recipe is presented as a practical way to include not five, but up to seven varieties of fruit in a single serving. The quantity of each fruit may be adjusted according to availability and preference.
Each type of fruit contains a range of nutrients, including vitamins and minerals, which may not be found in other varieties. The benefit of a mixed fruit salad lies in combining antioxidants, dietary fibre, and other natural nutrients in one bowl.
Ingredients may be altered or replaced according to seasonal availability. Preparation begins by washing and cutting the fruit into suitable pieces.
First, kiwi is peeled lightly or left with its skin if preferred, then sliced and placed in a bowl along with chopped melon. Mango is then cut and added to the mixture.
Pineapple is peeled, the core removed, and the flesh cut before being added to the bowl. Grapes are halved and combined with the remaining fruit, followed by berries and sliced strawberries if used. Orange segments are added after removing the inner membranes, along with any juice released during cutting.
Honey may be added if desired. The mixture is then combined and chilled for around thirty minutes if time allows. The salad may be served with fresh mint leaves and garnished with pomegranate seeds or crushed nuts where available.
