A 16-day-old infant has died in Sindh after reportedly showing symptoms of monkeypox, raising fresh concerns as child fatalities linked to the virus continue to increase.
A newborn girl, identified as Maimuna, passed away at a hospital in Gambat after allegedly contracting the monkeypox virus.
Following her death, the number of children who have died from suspected monkeypox-related complications has reached twelve, according to reports.
The health department has officially confirmed that seven children have died from monkeypox so far. However, not all reported deaths have been laboratory-confirmed, and investigations are ongoing.
Family recounts events
According to the child’s family, Maimuna first developed symptoms consistent with monkeypox, prompting them to seek medical care. She was initially taken to the City Children’s Hospital in Khairpur, where doctors admitted her to an isolation ward.
After two days of treatment in Khairpur, the infant was transferred to a hospital in Gambat for further care. There, she was again admitted to an isolation ward designated for monkeypox patients, where she later died during treatment.
Tests underway, virus not yet confirmed
Hospital administration officials stated that blood samples have been sent to a laboratory for testing. They clarified that monkeypox infection has not yet been confirmed in this case, and final results are awaited.
The incident has added to growing concerns over the spread of the virus among children, especially in vulnerable age groups. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation as efforts intensify to confirm cases and control the outbreak.
