Originally released in 1999 and developed by British studio Rare, Donkey Kong 64 became known for its expansive levels, collectible items and use of the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak accessory. The game also introduced the now well-known DK Rap.
Although the DK Rap received criticism at the time of release, it later gained cult popularity and appeared in several productions, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Super Smash Bros. soundtracks. Nintendo has also used the track in the latest announcement trailer for the game’s return.
Donkey Kong 64 will join nearly 40 Nintendo 64 titles already available through Nintendo Switch Online, including Super Mario 64, Paper Mario and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
The announcement follows the release of Donkey Kong Bananza for Nintendo Switch 2 last year and comes amid speculation among fans that Nintendo’s planned Mario film spin-off, scheduled for release in April 2028, may centre on Donkey Kong.
Fans also noted that the announcement coincided with the 10th anniversary of Harambe’s death.
