The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced a major programme to connect power grids and digital networks across Asia.
A scheme valued at $70 billion dollars has been initiated to strengthen regional connectivity. The ADB's president has said that energy and digital access will shape the future of the region. Efforts will focus on increasing cross-border electricity transmission and improving broadband access.
A sum of $50 billion has been allocated for power grid projects up to 2035, with an emphasis on promoting renewable energy. Under the plan, 20 gigawatts of renewable energy will be added to the system. Improved electricity access is expected to benefit 200 million people. Around 840,000 new jobs are anticipated.
For the digital highway initiative, $20 billion dollars has been set aside. Some 200 million people are likely to gain internet access for the first time. Digital projects are expected to create 4 million jobs, while internet services in remote areas are set to become more affordable.
