Popularly known as egg coffee, this creamy drink has caught global attention for its unique taste and texture. However, nutritionists warn it may come with hidden health risks.
Egg coffee, also referred to as Vietnamese egg coffee, is gaining popularity online for its rich, frothy appearance and dessert-like flavor.
The drink is prepared by first brewing plain coffee. Separately, egg yolk is whipped with sweetened condensed milk and sugar or honey until it becomes creamy and foamy. This mixture is then layered on top of hot coffee, creating a visually appealing beverage.
Despite its growing popularity, nutritionists caution that regular consumption of egg coffee may not be safe. While it may look indulgent, experts highlight several potential health risks linked to its ingredients and preparation method.
Risk of foodborne Illness
One of the primary concerns is the use of raw or undercooked egg yolks. These can contain Salmonella bacteria, which may lead to food poisoning.
Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. In severe cases, it can cause dehydration and serious complications.
People with weak immune systems, pregnant women, children, and the elderly are considered particularly vulnerable.
High sugar and calorie content
Egg coffee typically contains sweetened condensed milk along with added sugar or honey. This significantly increases its calorie count.
