Australian police have opened a formal investigation into a historical sexual assault allegation linked in media reports to US pop star Katy Perry, following claims made by actor Ruby Rose.
Victoria Police confirmed that detectives from its Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team (SOCIT) are examining an alleged incident said to have occurred in 2010 at a licensed venue in Melbourne’s central business district. Authorities did not name any individuals involved, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Police said specialist detectives are handling the inquiry and declined to provide further details, including evidence or identities, stating that it would be inappropriate to comment while the case remains active.
The development follows public allegations made earlier this month by Ruby Rose, who referenced the incident in now-deleted social media posts. She later stated that the alleged event took place “almost two decades ago” and confirmed she had submitted formal reports to police, after which she would not comment further due to procedural restrictions.
In a subsequent post, Rose said she had completed all required reporting and would refrain from public discussion while the investigation proceeds, adding that this was standard practice in such cases.
Representatives for Katy Perry have strongly denied the allegations, describing them as “categorically false” and calling them “dangerous, reckless lies.” Her representatives also criticised the credibility of the claims, alleging a pattern of unsubstantiated public accusations. Perry has not issued a personal statement beyond her official response.
Victoria Police reiterated that the matter remains under active investigation and confirmed that it involves an alleged historical sexual assault at a Melbourne venue in 2010. Officers said further developments will depend on the outcome of ongoing inquiries.
The case has drawn significant media attention, shifting from social media allegations to a formal legal investigation, with authorities emphasizing that no further comment will be made at this stage as the process continues.
