The Pakistani film Mera Lyari has been positioned as a positive and realistic portrayal of Karachi’s Lyari district and is set to premiere at the UK Asian Film Festival in response to the Indian film Dhurandhar.
The film, which reportedly challenges the negative depiction of Lyari in Dhurandhar, will showcase the cultural richness, resilience, and football passion of the area—often referred to as “Mini Brazil” due to its strong sporting identity.
After delays and missed deadlines, Mera Lyari is finally ready for release and will have its international premiere on May 2, 2026, at the 28th UK Asian Film Festival. The screening will take place at the British Film Institute in London’s South Bank, and tickets are available.
Executive producer Ayesha Omar announced that the film aims to present Lyari’s spirit on a global platform. She added that the film will release in Pakistan after its international debut.
According to the filmmakers, the project directly counters stereotypical narratives and instead highlights the talent, hope, and sporting culture of the community.
The film features a cast including Nayyar Ejaz, Parsa Mirza, Samia Mumtaz, Dananeer Mobeen, Adnan Shah Tipu, and Shuja Asad, along with debutant model Trinette Lucas.
The story follows a disabled football coach, played by Ayesha Omar, who returns to Lyari to conduct trials for young girls. There, two girls—Afshan, who faces opposition from her strict father, and Kashmala, who is trying to escape a forced marriage—find freedom through football and secretly train to pursue national-level opportunities.
Director Abu Aleeha has previously stated that the film’s strength lies in its authenticity, as it was shot in Lyari with local residents. He added that around 80% of the cast, including supporting actors and local footballers, are from the area itself.
