WhatsApp is testing a new and exciting feature that will allow users to see which of their contacts are currently online, a capability being introduced on the popular messaging platform for the first time.
According to reports, WhatsApp is developing a system that provides online status information without needing to open individual chats. Currently, users must open a chat to see someone’s online status, which appears next to their name, while in groups, a green dot indicates when a member is online.
The feature is currently being tested in the new beta version for Android devices. It is being designed similar to the Active tab in Facebook Messenger but aims to offer a simpler and more user-friendly experience.
Since the feature is in its early stages, it is not yet clear when it will roll out to all beta users and, eventually, to users worldwide. However, it is expected to significantly ease the process of quickly identifying which contacts are online at any given time.
