China has officially opened the world’s longest expressway tunnel, a major infrastructure project in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region.
Named the Tian Shan Shengli Tunnel, it spans approximately 22.13 kilometers through the Tian Shan Mountains in northwestern China.
The tunnel, which runs directly beneath the highway, features two separate passages, each with two lanes, allowing traffic to move at speeds of up to 100 km/h.
Previously, traveling through the mountainous route took several hours, but the new tunnel reduces the journey to around 20 minutes by car.
The Tian Shan Shengli Tunnel is part of the Urumqi–Yuli Expressway, connecting northern and southern cities of Xinjiang, and is expected to significantly improve both public and commercial transportation in the region.
