While the Great Wall of China is widely regarded as one of the wonders of the world, the world’s longest residential building in Ukraine is no less remarkable in its own right.
Located at the intersection of Sobornosti Avenue and Molodizi Street in the Ukrainian city of Lutsk, construction of this extraordinary building began in 1969 during the Soviet era and was completed 11 years later.
Although the construction period was unusually long, the project itself was highly unconventional. Conceived by architects Hryhorii Metelnytskyi and Viktor Malovitsa, the idea eventually took shape as the longest residential building in the world - a record it continues to hold more than 40 years later, with no comparable structure anywhere else.
Designed in a honeycomb-like pattern, the building’s main axis stretches approximately 1.75 kilometres. When additional extensions are included, its total length increases by another kilometre. It takes nearly an hour to walk from one end of the building to the other.
The massive structure features hundreds of entrances, more than 3,000 apartments, thousands of windows, and is home to nearly 10,000 residents. In sheer size and population, the world’s longest residential building is larger than many small towns, making it a true architectural wonder.
