Lifeguards have closed Sydney's iconic Bondi Beach along with several other nearby shores following the appearance of mysterious black "tar ball" globules.
Over the past few days, thousands of these spheres—ranging from pea to tennis ball size—have puzzled both locals and tourists alike.
Chemical testing has confirmed that these tar balls are hydrocarbon-based, leading local officials to investigate their origin.
The formation of tar balls typically occurs when oil slicks are agitated by wind and waves, creating a sticky emulsion that breaks down into smaller pieces.
To ensure public safety, a local council has announced that all Waverley Beaches will remain closed until further investigation is completed.
Dylan Parker, the mayor of a neighboring beachside council, echoed these concerns, stating, "Our beaches will remain closed and we are investigating. We are still waiting for the tides to come in."
Despite the official closures, some adventurous surfers and swimmers have been spotted in the water, as access to the beaches has not been strictly restricted.
