Samsung may discontinue its popular Galaxy Z Flip lineup after the launch of the Galaxy Z Flip 8, according to a new report citing a well-known industry leaker.
Renowned tipster Ice Universe (@UniverseIce) claimed on X that the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is likely to be Samsung's last compact foldable smartphone, suggesting the company may be shifting its focus away from clamshell-style foldables.
Although Samsung has not commented on the claim, several factors could explain such a move.
The Galaxy Z Flip series has traditionally been Samsung's best-selling foldable lineup, thanks to its compact design and relatively lower price compared with the Galaxy Z Fold series. However, recent reports indicate consumer preferences may be changing.
According to South Korean publication FN News, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 received more pre-orders than the Galaxy Z Flip 7 in Samsung's home market, pointing to growing demand for larger book-style foldable smartphones.
The expected arrival of Apple's first foldable iPhone could further strengthen interest in larger foldable devices, increasing competition in the premium segment.
Another challenge is rising component and memory costs, which may reduce the price advantage that helped make the Flip series popular among buyers looking for a more affordable foldable.
Reports also suggest Samsung is preparing to introduce a new, wider foldable model that sits between the Flip and Fold series in terms of size, potentially replacing the need for a compact clamshell device.
Despite the speculation, the Galaxy Z Flip series still has a loyal fan base. Its pocket-friendly design and portability remain key selling points that larger foldables cannot easily match.
Industry observers believe Samsung's final decision could depend on the commercial performance of the Galaxy Z Flip 8. Strong sales may persuade the company to continue the lineup with a future Galaxy Z Flip 9, while weak demand could mark the end of one of the smartphone industry's most distinctive foldable designs.
