New Zealand all-rounder Mitchell Santner has disclosed that he received only half of his agreed payment from Mumbai Indians after a shoulder injury ended his Indian Premier League campaign, leaving him deeply disappointed.
Speaking in an interview, Santner said he was ruled out of the IPL because of a shoulder injury. He said Mumbai Indians did not pay the full amount of his contract, worth INR20 million, and instead paid only half.
Santner said the reduced payment was particularly upsetting because the injury occurred during the tournament.
He said that he missed his first IPL match following the birth of his second child. After returning, he played against Delhi and suffered a shoulder injury. He returned to action a week later but injured the same shoulder again, forcing him to return home.
Santner maintained that his shoulder was injured twice within two weeks and he felt he was placing excessive strain on his body.
He said he had expected to require around eight weeks to recover fully, but regained fitness within four weeks and returned to the national side. He added that his quicker-than-expected recovery had prompted various discussions in the media.
Santner rejoined the New Zealand squad a week before the first Test against England after recovering from the shoulder injury.
He played five matches for Mumbai Indians in the IPL and was officially ruled out of the tournament on April 27.
Under IPL regulations, a player who suffers an injury during the tournament generally receives payment in accordance with the contract agreed at the auction.
Indian media reported that Mumbai Indians have not yet issued an official response to Santner's remarks regarding the payment.
It is pertinent to note that Mumbai Indians signed South African spinner Keshav Maharaj after Santner was ruled out of the IPL because of the shoulder injury.
