Details of the Power Division’s development budget for the next fiscal year have emerged, revealing a proposed allocation of Rs91 billion for 48 projects aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s electricity transmission and distribution network.
According to budget documents obtained by Samaa, the largest share of the proposed funding has been earmarked for ongoing projects, while a comparatively smaller amount has been set aside for new initiatives.
The development program proposes a total allocation of Rs91 billion for 48 projects under the Power Division.
Out of the total amount, Rs86 billion has been proposed for 45 projects that are already under implementation.
Only Rs4 billion has been recommended for three new projects planned for the upcoming fiscal year.
The proposed spending reflects the government's continued focus on completing major energy infrastructure projects and expanding the national transmission network.
Dasu Hydropower Project receives largest allocation
Among the key projects, the Dasu Hydropower Project has been allocated the largest proposed amount.
According to the documents, Rs10.8 billion has been recommended for the evacuation and transmission of electricity generated by the Dasu Hydropower Project.
The project is considered one of Pakistan’s most significant hydropower investments and a key component of the country’s future energy supply strategy.
The budget also includes substantial allocations for other hydropower-linked transmission projects. A proposal has been made to allocate Rs3 billion for the transmission system associated with the Suki Kinari Hydropower Project.
In addition, Rs3.9 billion has been proposed for transmitting electricity from Mohmand Dam to the national grid. These projects are expected to improve the integration of hydropower generation into Pakistan’s electricity network.
National grid expansion remains priority
The development budget outlines several initiatives aimed at strengthening and expanding the national grid system.
According to the documents, Rs700 million has been proposed for the 500kV Lahore North Grid Station project. Another Rs3 billion has been recommended for the upgradation of the National Transmission and Despatch Company (NTDC) transmission system.
Officials believe these investments will help improve grid reliability and support growing electricity demand across the country.
One of the largest proposed allocations in the transmission sector is for the Islamabad West Grid Station project. The budget recommends more than Rs9.32 billion for the construction of the Islamabad West Grid Station.
The project is expected to play a significant role in enhancing power transmission capacity in the federal capital and surrounding regions.
Distribution system upgrades included
The proposed development program also focuses on improving electricity distribution infrastructure.
According to the documents, Rs3 billion has been proposed for the improvement of the power distribution system in MEPCO’s service areas. Another Rs2.41 billion has been earmarked for upgrading the power transmission system.
The budget further proposes allocating more than Rs2.91 billion for the installation of power consumption devices aimed at improving the power distribution system in ten districts.
The proposed allocations indicate that the government intends to prioritize transmission infrastructure, hydropower connectivity and distribution efficiency during the next fiscal year.
If approved, the projects are expected to support grid modernization, improve electricity delivery and strengthen the country's overall power sector performance.
