US President Donald Trump said Monday that Iran “really wants” to reach a deal with the United States, even as both countries remain locked in a tense cycle of military exchanges and ceasefire negotiations.
President Trump said in a new social media statement that Iran wanted to make a deal with Washington and that any agreement would benefit the United States and its partners.
“Iran really wants to make a deal, and it will be a good one for the U.S.A. and those that are with us,” Trump posted on Truth Social about an hour after midnight.
The remarks came as diplomatic efforts continue to extend the ceasefire with Iran and move toward a broader agreement to end the three-month-old war.
Statement follows fresh military exchange
Trump’s post surfaced only hours after the US military said it had struck Iranian military sites over the weekend.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said in response that they had targeted a US base, marking the latest exchange in a series of strikes during negotiations to end the conflict.

The back-and-forth has added pressure to talks that are already taking place under fragile security conditions.
Trump criticises political opponents
Trump also said it had become more difficult for him to negotiate with Iran because of political commentary surrounding the conflict.
He criticized Democrats and other opponents, saying they were attacking him “for no reason” and giving contradictory advice about how he should handle the talks.
According to Trump, political critics sometimes urge him to speed up negotiations, sometimes tell him to slow down, and at other times debate whether the US should go to war or avoid war.
In his Truth Social post, Trump said political criticism was making it tougher for him to do his job properly.
“It is MUCH tougher for me to properly do my job and negotiate, when political hacks keep negatively ‘chirping,’ at levels never seen before, over and over again, that I should move faster, or move slower, or go to war, or not go to war, or whatever,” he wrote.
Trump told his critics to remain calm, adding: “Just sit back and relax, it will all work out well in the end — It always does!”
Ceasefire decision expected
Trump had said on Friday that he would soon decide on a proposed deal to extend the ceasefire with Iran.
The latest statement suggests the US president still sees room for diplomacy, despite the recent strikes and political pressure at home.
