The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has accelerated preparations for the budget of the next fiscal year, with the Finance Department deciding to prioritise the completion of 218 major development projects.
Officials have also finalized a strategy to direct most development funding toward ongoing schemes while limiting the number of new projects to ensure more efficient use of public resources.
According to sources in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Finance Department, various sections of the department are currently working on finalizing the budget for the upcoming fiscal year.
As part of the planning process, the provincial government has made an in-principle decision to identify and prioritise 218 development projects that will receive special attention in the new budget.
Officials say these projects will be completed at all costs to improve development outcomes and avoid delays.
Majority to ongoing projects
The Finance Department has decided to allocate 80% of the development budget to ongoing projects. The remaining 20% of development funds will be reserved for new projects that are expected to begin during the next fiscal year.
The move is aimed at preventing the fragmentation of resources and ensuring that existing projects are completed on time.
Sources said the provincial government has also decided to invest in mega development projects instead of spreading financial resources across a large number of smaller schemes.

The strategy reflects an effort to maximize the impact of public spending and improve the pace of development across the province.
Officials believe concentrating resources on larger projects will deliver better results than distributing funds among numerous initiatives.
Development projects to remain limited
According to Finance Department sources, the number of expected development projects in the next fiscal year's budget will be kept at 2,500.
The government is also planning to further reduce the carry-forward burden of development schemes in Budget 2026-27.

Sources said a decision has been made to bring the carry-forward amount down to Rs1,500 billion as part of broader efforts to improve development planning and fiscal management.
Focus on project completion
The latest budget strategy indicates that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is prioritizing project completion, efficient resource allocation and long-term development planning.
By focusing on 218 priority projects, allocating most funds to ongoing schemes and investing in mega projects, the province aims to improve development outcomes while reducing the financial burden of unfinished projects.
