Heavy rain and hail in different parts of Lahore turned the weather pleasant on Saturday, bringing much-needed relief to citizens after several days of intense heat.
Dark clouds covered the city in the morning, turning daylight into an evening-like scene as thunder, cool winds and heavy showers swept through several areas.
The weather changed dramatically in Lahore as clouds formed across different parts of the city and rain began with thunder. Gusts of cool wind made conditions more pleasant, while hail was also reported in different areas.
Citizens affected by the ongoing heat wave came out to enjoy the rain as temperatures dropped and the weather became cool and refreshing.
Rainfall recorded across city
Lahore recorded a total of 26.5mm of rain, according to weather data. The highest rainfall was recorded in Nishtar Town at 48mm, followed by Johar Town with 37mm, Lakshmi Chowk with 30mm and Gulberg with 20mm.
The wind speed in the city was recorded at 19 kilometres per hour.
The rain caused a clear decrease in temperature across Lahore. According to the Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature in the city is likely to reach 33°C.
Officials said the heat wave has broken, and the intensity of the heat is expected to fall further due to the continuing rain spell.
More rain likely in Lahore
The Met Department has predicted more rain in Lahore from Tuesday and said thunderstorms may continue throughout the day. Officials said the current rain spell is likely to continue for the next few days, which may further reduce temperatures.
A weather system is forming, and rain is expected in different areas during the next two to four hours.
The Met Department said rain is also likely in Murree, Galiyat, Rawalpindi, Talagang and Attock. Showers are also expected in Chakwal, Sargodha and Faisalabad, while heavy rain and hail may occur at a few places.
More rain is forecast in Rawalakot, Kotli, Bhimber, Sialkot, Narowal, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Hafizabad, Sheikhupura, Lahore and Kasur.
Power supply disrupted in several areas
The heavy rain also affected electricity supply in several parts of Lahore. According to LESCO, 49 feeders tripped due to the rain.
Restoration work is underway to restore power supply in the affected areas.
The Punjab Disaster Management Authority said two rain-related incidents have so far been reported in Punjab. In Lahore, a wall collapsed on an auto-rickshaw near Wapda Town, injuring a man and a child.
In Chak 14 Pattoki, Kasur, a house collapsed due to rain, leaving a woman injured after a roof cave-in.
