Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader and former provincial minister Malik Nadeem Kamran passed away on Friday.
He had been under treatment in hospital due to a prolonged illness.
The funeral prayers of the late Malik Nadeem Kamran will be offered in his hometown of Sahiwal. His death has saddened political circles, particularly within the PML-N, where he remained an important and senior figure.
Long association with PML-N
Malik Nadeem Kamran served as a former provincial minister and also held the position of former provincial president of PML-N Punjab.
He was regarded as one of the party’s experienced leaders in Punjab politics.
Kamran was the father of Parliamentary Secretary for Forests Malik Qasim Nadeem. His political career and family’s continued public role made him a prominent name in Sahiwal and Punjab’s political landscape.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed deep grief and sorrow over the passing of Malik Nadeem Kamran. She also extended her heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the bereaved family and other mourners.
CM Maryam paid tribute to Kamran’s political and party services, saying he was a hardworking, friendly and people-centric leader.
“His contributions and services to the Pakistan Muslim League-N will always be remembered,” she said.
Who was Malik Nadeem Kamran?
Malik Nadeem Kamran, son of Malik Atta Muhammad, was born on August 3, 1953, in Sahiwal. He completed his graduation from Government College Sahiwal in 1976.
He began his political journey during his student years and served as president of the Students’ Union at Government College Sahiwal from 1973 to 1974. Over the years, he remained actively involved in local politics and public affairs.
Malik Nadeem Kamran served as a councillor of the Municipal Committee Sahiwal and later as deputy opposition leader of the Municipal Committee from 1991 to 1993. He also remained general secretary of Anjuman Tajiran (Central) Sahiwal for nearly two decades, from 1985 to 2005.
Apart from politics, he held leadership positions in several social, sports and community organizations. He served as general secretary of Sahiwal Club from 1988 to 1993, president of Sports Hockey Club Sahiwal for 10 years, and president of the District Cricket Association for seven years.
A businessman by profession, Malik Nadeem was elected as an MPA in Punjab multiple times. During his first tenure from 1997 to 1999, he served as chairman of the Standing Committee on Home Affairs.
From 2008 to 2013, he held ministerial portfolios, including food, tourism, Zakat and Ushr. During his 2013-2016 term, he served as minister for Zakat and Ushr while also holding the additional charge of housing, urban development and public health engineering.
Later, from 2016 to 2018, he served as Punjab’s minister for planning and development. He was re-elected as an MPA for the fourth time in the 2018 general elections.
