Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has publicly referred a corruption case to the anti-corruption authorities after alleged irregularities surfaced in the Suthra Punjab project in Faisalabad.
According to details that surfaced on Thursday, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari said the chief minister herself exposed serious corruption linked to the scheme in Faisalabad.
She said Maryam Nawaz dispatched a special team of auditors to Faisalabad, where investigators uncovered an organised nexus between contractors and government officials.
Azma said public funds allocated for the Suthra Punjab programme were allegedly being used for personal interests, adding that the collusion was directly harming development projects under the scheme.
She stated that the inquiry was not initiated due to any complaint or outside pressure, but was the result of strict monitoring by the chief minister herself.
The minister said the Punjab chief minister was keeping a close watch on every street and every project, and warned that those accused of looting public money would face firm action.
