Authorities have issued an alert over the risk of glacial lake outbursts in the upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where heavy rains, strong winds and rising temperatures may trigger flash floods and landslides.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has directed district administrations to take emergency measures and ensure advance preparedness.
According to the Meteorological Department, a new series of westerly winds will enter Khyber Pakhtunkhwa today. The system is expected to bring heavy rains and strong winds to several upper districts.
PDMA said the changing weather may increase the risk of glacier bursts, glacial lake outburst floods and sudden flooding in vulnerable mountain areas.
Upper districts face higher risk
The alert covers upper districts including Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat and Upper Kohistan. Authorities have also mentioned Chitral, Swat, Dir and Kohistan among the areas at risk of flash floods.
The administration in these districts has been instructed to monitor the rapid melting of glaciers and possible bursting of glacial lakes.
PDMA warned that the risk of flash floods and landslides has increased in upper areas due to rising temperatures and expected rainfall.

PDMA has directed district administrations to ensure emergency measures and complete advance preparations. The agencies concerned have been told to increase vigilance in sensitive areas.
Civil administrations have also been ordered to keep timely warning systems active so communities can be alerted before any emergency.
Authorities have asked tourists and farmers to remain cautious during the new spell of rains. People in vulnerable areas have been advised to take protective measures and avoid unnecessary movement near streams, slopes and glacier-fed routes.
The alert has been issued to help local administrations, rescue teams and communities prepare before the expected severe weather.
