An unusual case has emerged from India where a woman sought police assistance to arrange her marriage.
According to Indian media reports, Madhuri Patel, a resident of Sarai Inayat in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, submitted an application to the police. In her complaint, the woman stated that her family had been avoiding her marriage in order to save expenses.
Madhuri Patel said she wished to marry, but her brother and brother-in-law repeatedly created obstacles and had rejected several marriage proposals.
She alleged that her brother had transferred family land into his own name and was no longer willing to take responsibility for arranging her marriage.
In her application, Madhuri Patel named her father, mother, brother and brother-in-law, stating that she had been living alone for the past 20 years and meeting her own expenses.
The woman also accused her family of mistreatment and said she had suffered mental distress as well as physical abuse.
Madhuri Patel urged the police to find a suitable man and arrange her marriage so that she could live with dignity.
Indian police said an inquiry had begun after receiving the complaint and that action would be taken on the basis of evidence.
