The Punjab Forest Amendment Act has been challenged in the Lahore High Court.
A petition has been filed in the High Court by local lawyer Ali Changezi Sandhu. The Punjab government and others have been named as respondents in the petition.
The plea said that, under existing law, forest land cannot be used for any other purpose. It stated that an amendment was made to the Forest Act in the Punjab Assembly.
The amendment allows the provincial and federal governments to use forest land for any project. It is stated that international organisations recommend Pakistan requires approximately 24 per cent forest cover.
Pakistan is reported to have only around five to six per cent forest area. The petition added that environmental pollution in Pakistan is increasing day by day.
The court has been requested to declare multiple provisions of the amendment act void.
