After half marathons and boxing, robots have now entered the field of table tennis to compete against the world’s leading players.
Foreign media reports have stated that a major development in artificial intelligence and robotics has taken place in Tokyo, where an autonomous ping-pong robot named Ace faced top human players and, on several occasions, defeated them.
Experts have said this achievement may pave the way for the use of similar advanced robotic systems across a range of future fields.
The robot, Ace has been developed by the AI Research Division of Japanese company Sony and is being described as the first machine capable of performing at an expert level in a competitive physical sport, having won three out of five matches against leading table tennis players.
The project lead said the robot achieved this result through rapid perception, an AI-based control system, and advanced robotics technology.
