Journalist Irshad Bhatti has issued a detailed response after facing criticism over his recent podcast interview with actress Meera, which sparked widespread debate on social media.
The controversy began when Meera appeared on the podcast to promote her upcoming film “Psycho”, but the discussion shifted toward her personal life, including past rumors, alleged relationships, and other controversies.
During the interview, Meera attempted to steer the conversation back to her film but later left the session as the questioning continued.
Following the backlash, Irshad Bhatti addressed the issue in a vlog, saying that Meera was invited through a paid arrangement managed by a media company that organizes sponsored podcast interviews with celebrities.
He stated that the questions asked were not new or personal attacks, but were based on topics that have already been widely discussed in the media. Bhatti maintained that questioning is an essential part of journalism and said he had no intention of disrespect.
Responding to criticism, he said he was surprised by the intensity of the reaction and added that even some acquaintances had expressed disappointment. He offered an apology if Meera or others felt hurt by the interview, while also defending his journalistic approach.
Bhatti further argued that his questioning was being unfairly interpreted and questioned whether journalists are being discouraged from asking tough questions. He added that Meera's past controversies have already been public, and said he respects her as an artist.
He concluded by reiterating that if Meera personally felt offended, he is willing to apologize directly to her.
