The federal government has decided to implement a nationwide digital fuel management system to monitor petrol sales and distribution.
The government has finalized plans to introduce a digital fuel management system across the country’s petrol pumps.
Under this initiative, the purchase and sale of petrol will be fully monitored through a centralized digital mechanism linked with the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA).
As part of the rollout, 24,000 mobile phones have been procured for 12,000 petrol pumps nationwide. These devices have already been handed over to oil marketing companies through OGRA to ensure smooth implementation of the system.
Sources in the Petroleum Division confirmed that the system will rely on mobile phones approved by the National Information Technology Board (NITB) and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
Fuel app linked to OGRA system
A dedicated fuel management mobile application has been integrated with OGRA’s digital system. This app will enable real-time monitoring of petroleum products, including stock levels, deliveries, and the purchase and sale process.
The system will also facilitate the sale of imported and exported petroleum products through the same digital platform.
Crackdown on hoarding and smuggling
Officials say the new system is designed to prevent illegal hoarding and smuggling of petroleum products. With complete digital tracking, authorities will be able to monitor supply chains and detect irregularities more effectively.
Petrol quota for citizens
A key feature of the initiative is the introduction of a petrol quota system for citizens. The government will set limits on how much fuel an individual can purchase, and no one will be allowed to exceed the prescribed quota.
The quota system will be implemented through a ready-made mobile application developed under the Pakistan Digital Authority.
To ensure smooth adoption, petrol pump staff are currently undergoing training on the fuel management system and mobile app. The training process involves teams from the Ministry of IT, NITB, and OGRA, along with volunteers from the Prime Minister’s Youth Program.
According to sources, the testing phase of the fuel management application has already been completed successfully. With infrastructure, devices, and training in place, the government is now preparing for full-scale implementation across petrol pumps nationwide.
