A summary proposing a reduction in fines across various categories by 100 to 150 per cent in Lahore has been sent to the cabinet following approval by the Punjab chief minister, with endorsement expected shortly.
According to details surfaced on Wednesday, the summary said that fines had been increased last year for violations of traffic laws, after which the government ordered a fresh review and the submission of a revised proposal.
Under the new proposals, fines in seven categories for motorcycles and rickshaws are to be reduced by 100 per cent. The minimum fine for motorcycles is proposed at Rs1,000 and the maximum at Rs2,000.
For motor cars and motor jeeps up to 2,000cc, fines are to remain unchanged, ranging from Rs3,000 to Rs5,000.
In the case of luxury vehicles, fines in 13 categories have been reduced by 100 per cent. Previously, fines ranging from Rs5,000 to Rs20,000 were being collected; under the new summary, these are to range from Rs2,000 to Rs10,000.
In the commercial vehicle category, a reduction of 100 to 150 per cent in fines has also been proposed, with amounts to range from a minimum of Rs2,000 to a maximum of Rs10,000.
