Rawalpindiz batter Sam Billings has recalled the first match in the history of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in 2016, when he represented Islamabad United against Quetta Gladiators at the Dubai stadium.
Speaking to PCB Digital, the England cricketer said he had the distinction of playing in the opening match of the league’s inaugural season. He described the PSL as the first franchise tournament of his career.
Billings said he remained grateful for the early opportunity provided by Islamabad United in 2016. He added that he admired the hospitality in Pakistan and valued his time in the country.
He said the standard of overseas players in this year’s PSL was very high, with leading cricketers from around the world taking part. He noted that franchise tournaments such as the PSL had contributed to his development and provided opportunities to compete at a high level.
Billings said he tried to maintain a positive attitude and adapt to Pakistani culture. He added that learning the local language, Urdu, was enjoyable and helped strengthen bonds with team-mates.
He recalled a visit to Islamabad for a barbecue last year as a pleasant experience, where he enjoyed local culture and cuisine.
Billings said the PSL player auction had made the competition more balanced. He added that the inclusion of quality overseas players, including Adam Zampa, was significant for the tournament.
He described the PSL as a strong league in terms of on-field skills and competitiveness, adding that the standard of talent in Pakistan remained impressive.
Billings identified Abdullah Fazal, Saad Masood and Yasir Khan as young Rawalpindi players to watch.
He also recalled winning the PSL trophy with Lahore Qalandars at Gaddafi Stadium in 2023 as a special memory, along with a thrilling final victory against Multan Sultans on home ground.
