Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has decided to establish a cyber crime unit to counter the online harassment of women.
According to details that emerged on Friday, the chief minister, while chairing a meeting, approved measures to curb harassment and blackmail faced by children and women on social media. She decided to set up the Punjab Cyber Crime Unit to provide immediate and secure assistance to victims.
In a major step, approval was granted for the unit aimed at eliminating harassment and blackmail on digital platforms. A mobile unit will reach affected individuals, removing the need for women and children to visit police stations. Complaints may also be registered through a virtual police station and the PKM application.
The government assured that the identity of victims will remain strictly confidential. New legislation is also under consideration to ensure strict punishment for cyber offenders.
The chief minister said cyber crime posed a serious challenge and all possible measures would be taken to safeguard the younger generation.
