A woman passenger gave birth to a child aboard a flight travelling from the Caribbean state of Jamaica to the American city of New York.
The Caribbean Airlines flight departed from Kingston on April 4 for John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. According to a statement issued by the airline, an emergency arose during the journey; however, the situation remained under control and the woman safely delivered the baby. Upon arrival in New York, a medical team examined the mother and child and provided the necessary care.
Media reports stated that the newborn is a boy. The question of his nationality remains unclear.
This uncertainty arises due to the absence of details regarding the parents and the lack of clarity about the aircraft’s exact position at the time of the birth.
If either parent is an American citizen, the child will be entitled to United States nationality.
Even if the parents are not American, United States law provides that a child born aboard an aircraft flying within American airspace is entitled to American citizenship.
