The Punjab government has rejected a proposal to close markets early, opting instead to keep businesses open until 10pm across the province.
The move comes amid ongoing austerity discussions linked to recent Middle East tensions.
According to sources close to the Punjab government, it has been agreed that markets across Punjab will remain open until 10pm. The decision comes after initial recommendations to reduce market hours could not be approved in the first phase.
Sources revealed that the proposal to close markets early as part of an austerity drive has been postponed for now. The recommendations were presented to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, but they did not receive approval at this stage.
Govt avoids added pressure on traders
Maryam emphasized that traders cannot be put under further economic pressure, especially in the current situation. This concern played a key role in delaying the implementation of reduced business hours.
The Punjab government has decided to hold further consultations with trader organizations and business representatives before making any final decision.
Sources confirmed that discussions are ongoing, and any change in market working hours will be finalized after mutual consultation.
Austerity policy still in focus
Despite delaying the market closure plan, the government has issued directions to strictly implement the broader austerity policy. Sources also indicated that another important meeting will be held to review and discuss austerity measures in detail.
Officials reiterated that the final decision regarding market timings will be taken after completing consultations with all stakeholders.
Until then, markets across Punjab will continue operating under the current schedule.
