Over the past two decades, the world has witnessed an unprecedented surge in science and technology. Nations that quickly recognized and embraced this transformation surged ahead, leaving others behind.
From the early days of telephones, computers, mobile phones, and the internet -- technologies once underestimated -- to their universal adoption today, the pace of change has been remarkable.
Now, Artificial Intelligence (AI) represents the next frontier. Initially dismissed by some as a novelty and feared by others as a threat, AI has firmly established itself as a transformative force shaping the future of economies and governance worldwide.
In Pakistan, Punjab stands out as the only province that has proactively recognized the strategic importance of AI and initiated a comprehensive roadmap to harness its potential.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Punjab is positioning itself as a forward-looking, technologically driven region. Her pragmatic and modern outlook has led to the approval of Pakistan’s first structured AI roadmap, with the ambitious vision of transforming Punjab into South Asia’s AI hub by 2029.
To achieve this, a dedicated project team has been constituted under her direct supervision. A landmark initiative under this plan is the establishment of the world’s first AI Delivery Unit in Punjab. The province’s AI strategy is being spearheaded by Ali Dar, adviser to the chief minister on artificial intelligence, whose expertise in the field is increasingly gaining recognition.
The roadmap outlines significant economic and social benefits. Over the next three years, it is projected to create more than 100,000 jobs, contribute an additional 5–10% to the national GDP, and potentially generate $10–20 billion in foreign exchange through technology-driven growth.
Punjab’s AI roadmap is comprehensive, covering infrastructure development, governance frameworks, citizen-centric AI services, skills training, and AI-led economic transformation. Specialized teams will focus on data management, strategic operations, communication, and high-impact projects. Additionally, an AI Advisory Board comprising leading experts is being established to guide implementation.
A phased execution plan has already been prepared. The AI roadmap will be officially launched shortly after Eid, followed by the international rollout of the AI Delivery Unit in June. Subsequent milestones include the introduction of an AI governance policy in July, global tech partnerships and a citizen portal in August, and sector-specific initiatives such as healthcare applications, environmental monitoring systems, and agricultural AI solutions in the months ahead.
Importantly, Punjab is investing in future talent. AI education has already been introduced in 100 schools, with plans to expand to 155 more institutions. Structured short-, medium-, and long-term targets have been set, with monthly benchmarks to ensure steady progress. Government departments are also being transitioned towards AI-based systems, marking a significant shift in governance.
Data security remains a top priority, with assurances that citizens’ information will be fully protected. At the same time, AI is expected to unlock new opportunities for youth. Freelancers and digital workers could see their incomes grow significantly with AI skills, transforming Punjab into a global freelancing powerhouse.
International interest in Punjab’s AI vision is also growing. Delegations from leading global firms, including the DAMAC Group, have shown keen interest in investing in the province’s AI ecosystem. With Punjab already contributing 65% of Pakistan’s IT exports and producing over 25,000 IT graduates annually, cities like Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan, and Gujranwala are rapidly evolving into major technology hubs.
Punjab is also among the world’s largest freelancing markets, offering a strong foundation for AI-driven economic expansion. By equipping its youth with advanced skills, the province aims to significantly increase earning potential and attract foreign investment.
The vision is clear: to position Punjab as Pakistan’s gateway for technology and digital investment. With strong political will, strategic planning, and capable leadership, Punjab is not only embracing the AI revolution but is also preparing to lead it.
In a rapidly evolving global landscape, such initiatives signal a new era for Pakistan -- one where innovation, technology, and human potential converge to shape a prosperous future.
