Chip giant Nvidia on Monday introduced its latest AI-powered graphics technology, DLSS 5, calling it a “GPT moment” for gaming.
The upgrade, which leverages generative AI to enhance real-time graphics, is designed to improve visual realism in elements such as lighting, reflections, and shadows.
Nvidia claims it will allow game developers to deliver photorealistic visuals previously limited to Hollywood effects.
DLSS 5 will debut this autumn and only runs on Nvidia’s high-end graphics cards.
A demo video showcased enhancements in titles including Resident Evil Requiem, Starfield, and Hogwarts Legacy, highlighting dramatic lighting and color improvements. However, some character features, such as fuller lips and larger eyes on female characters, sparked criticism.
Gamers and online commentators expressed concerns that the technology could distort the original artistic vision of games, with some comparing the changes to low-effort AI-generated imagery on social media.
In response, Nvidia emphasized that developers retain full control over DLSS 5’s effects and that the technology is optional for players. Bethesda also reassured fans that artists will control its implementation in Starfield.
While Nvidia positions DLSS 5 as a major leap for gaming graphics, reactions online suggest the company faces a debate over balancing AI enhancements with artistic integrity.
