A GameStop store in New York gathered hundreds of people dressed as Mario in a bid to set a global record while marking Nintendo’s famous character day, ‘Mario Day’.
The event took place on Tuesday at the GameStop outlet in Union Square, where 270 participants attended. March 10 is known as Mario Day because the way Mar10 appears resembles the spelling of Mario.
GameStop Director of Communications Nicole Robles said the character reminds people of their childhood and of a carefree time, while many continue to play video games even later in life.
All participants received a five-dollar store credit from GameStop. Ross Martens, who wore the gold-coloured Mario costume from New Super Mario Bros. 2, won the award for best Mario outfit and received a Nintendo Switch 2 as a prize.
Organisers said the gathering surpassed the previous record of 230 Marios set in China in 2010. However, the attempt may not receive formal recognition from Guinness World Records as no official representative was present to verify the record.
