Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz assigned on Wednesday the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) the responsibility of ensuring the elimination of illegal weapons.
A comprehensive act has also been prepared to curb the display and unlawful use of arms. The chief minister has approved the Punjab Surrender Illicit Arms Act 2026. The proposed legislation contains provisions for the elimination of all forms of illegal weapons.
Under the act, special permission will also be required to display rare weapons at home.
Following the enforcement of the new law, illegal weapons must be surrendered to the CTD. Even citizens holding licensed arms will be required to provide a reasonable justification for possessing the weapon.
Strict penalties have been proposed under the act for those who fail to surrender illegal weapons within the stipulated period.
